GFF: Day Six

Second last day of the festival and I only had the one showing again today, the dark family drama Concussion, starring two actresses who I know well from the TV series 'Sons of Anarchy', Robin Weigert and Maggie Siff (in a lesser part). Therefore was looking forward to this one.

Concussion — this intimate view into a marriage that slowly tears itself apart after the titular concussion is suffered during a family day out. In a drastic change, Abby decides to become an escort, satisfying her need for sex and difference from the mundane chores of everyday life. Can she keep it a secret from her wife and can she give it up for the sake of saving her marriage?

Robin Weigert gives a passionate performance as Abby, even if the said concussion is glossed over in the big picture of things. However her character is another one that is difficult to relate to in a way, rather than sitting down with her wife and discussing their problems, she takes to prostitution! That's normal right? Still it's beautifully filmed, light airy set pieces contrasting the darker nature of the goings-on taking place behind the closed doors of her spare apartment. In the end there appears to be an unsaid agreement between the wives, which feels a little empty. Perhaps seeing the difference pre- and post-concussion of Abby's feelings would help to understand the character better or finding a reason for the dramatic change. None of this happened though and you were left believing her to be completely selfish.
