After a great day yesterday, it was back to work today at my job as a graphic designer and therefore could only manage one film, Drew: The Man behind the Poster, played at the Centre for Contemporary Arts (with the worst seats for a movie!). As the day job and hobbies, that include painting and drawing, suggests I was most interested in this one...
Drew: The Man behind the Poster – a documentary film on the crazy talented artist and illustrator Drew Struzan, most famously known for movie posters such as Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Back to the Future and Police Academy. Running through the trials and tribulations of his life, he comes across as humble but he is adored by many great names, who are all here to fawn over him.
If I came out of this film with anything it was a wish that I could be that talented. I also had an urge to get the paints out! It's quite impressive seeing the vast array of art that he has created for the movie industry, so much so that even if you don't know his name you will have seen his work at some point. The film itself starts a little slowly and it's only once you start to see the art, the techniques and hear how they came about things pick up. I would recommend this to any aspiring artists, illustrators and designers, anyone with an interest in films and especially admirers of the beauty of illustrated movie posters, which the film concludes to be a dying art form.
Long live the paintbrush!
